Publication Ethics

The Hyderabad Journal of Sciences (HJS) is dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of publication ethics to ensure the credibility, integrity, and transparency of the research it publishes. This Publication Ethics Policy provides clear guidelines for authors, editors, and reviewers to follow, ensuring that all parties involved in the publication process adhere to ethical principles.

1. Ethical Responsibilities of Authors

  • Originality: Authors must submit only original research that has not been previously published or is not under simultaneous consideration by another journal. Any work that is derived from or builds upon other research must be appropriately cited.

  • Proper Citation: Authors are required to cite all sources used in their research, including data, ideas, or materials that are not their own. This includes properly attributing all sources of information and previous work.

  • Authorship: Authors must ensure that all individuals who made significant contributions to the manuscript are listed as authors. All co-authors must approve the manuscript before submission, and each author should have made a meaningful contribution to the research.

  • Disclosure of Conflict of Interest: Authors must disclose any financial, personal, or professional conflicts of interest that could influence the results or interpretation of their research. This includes any funding sources, personal relationships, or institutional affiliations that may pose a conflict.

  • Data Integrity: Authors are responsible for ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the data presented in their manuscript. Fabrication, falsification, or misrepresentation of data is strictly prohibited. Authors must also ensure that all data can be accessed and verified.

  • Ethical Approval: If the research involves human or animal subjects, authors must obtain appropriate ethical approval from relevant review boards and include this information in the manuscript. Ethical guidelines should be followed throughout the research process.

  • Plagiarism: Authors must avoid plagiarism in all its forms, including self-plagiarism, and ensure that all borrowed material is properly cited. Any form of duplication, including copying of text, ideas, or data, without proper attribution is considered unethical.

2. Ethical Responsibilities of Reviewers

  • Confidentiality: Reviewers must treat all manuscripts as confidential and should not share or discuss the manuscript with anyone other than the editor(s). They must not use any information or ideas from the manuscript for personal or professional gain.

  • Objectivity: Reviewers are expected to evaluate manuscripts objectively, providing constructive, unbiased, and specific feedback. Criticism should be directed at the content and not the author(s).

  • Conflict of Interest: Reviewers must disclose any conflicts of interest that could affect their impartiality. If a reviewer has a personal, professional, or financial connection to the authors or the content of the manuscript, they should recuse themselves from the review process.

  • Timeliness: Reviewers must complete their evaluations within the specified timeframe. If they are unable to meet the deadline, they should notify the editor and decline the review request.

  • Proper Citation: Reviewers should alert the editor if they believe that important references have been omitted or that the manuscript contains errors related to citations.

3. Ethical Responsibilities of Editors

  • Decision Making: Editors have the responsibility to make decisions on manuscripts based on their scientific merit, originality, and relevance to the journal’s scope. Editorial decisions should not be influenced by the authors' gender, race, nationality, or institutional affiliation.

  • Confidentiality: Editors must ensure that manuscripts are kept confidential during the review process. Manuscripts should not be shared with unauthorized parties, and the content should not be disclosed or used before publication.

  • Fairness and Impartiality: Editors must evaluate manuscripts fairly and impartially, ensuring that all authors are treated equally and that decisions are based solely on the quality and relevance of the research.

  • Conflict of Interest: Editors must disclose any conflicts of interest that could affect their impartiality in handling a manuscript. If an editor has a conflict of interest with a manuscript, they must recuse themselves from making any decisions regarding that manuscript.

  • Transparency: Editors must ensure that the review and publication process is transparent. The editorial board should provide clear guidelines to authors, reviewers, and other stakeholders involved in the process.

  • Handling Complaints: Editors must address any ethical complaints or disputes regarding a manuscript. If misconduct is suspected, such as plagiarism or data fabrication, the editor must investigate the issue thoroughly and take appropriate action.

  • Corrections and Retractions: If errors or unethical practices are identified after publication, the editor must ensure that proper corrections or retractions are issued, maintaining the transparency and accuracy of the journal.

4. Ethical Responsibilities of the Journal

  • Transparency in Publishing: The Hyderabad Journal of Sciences is committed to transparency in all aspects of the publication process, from submission to post-publication. This includes clear communication with authors, reviewers, and readers about the journal’s policies and procedures.

  • Copyright Compliance: The journal adheres to copyright laws and ensures that authors retain copyright over their work while granting the journal the right to publish and distribute the article in both digital and print formats. Authors must also ensure they have the necessary permissions for any third-party content included in their manuscript.

  • Open Access: The journal follows an open-access policy, ensuring that all articles are freely accessible to the global academic community. This policy promotes the dissemination of knowledge and ensures that research can be freely shared and cited.

  • Publication Fees: Any article processing charges (APCs) or fees will be clearly communicated to authors before submission. The journal ensures that fees are reasonable and that no financial barriers are imposed that would limit access to publication for authors from diverse backgrounds.

5. Handling of Research Misconduct

  • Investigation of Allegations: The journal takes allegations of research misconduct (such as plagiarism, data manipulation, or unethical authorship) seriously. If misconduct is suspected, the editor will investigate the matter and take appropriate action, which may include rejecting the manuscript or retracting a published article.

  • Corrective Actions: If any ethical violations are discovered after publication, the journal will issue corrections or retractions as necessary. In cases of severe misconduct, the article may be permanently removed from the journal’s archives, and the authors may be banned from submitting future manuscripts.

  • Appeal Process: Authors who disagree with editorial decisions related to ethical issues or allegations of misconduct can appeal the decision. The appeal will be reviewed by the editorial board, and a final decision will be made.

6. Compliance with Legal and Ethical Standards

  • Data Privacy and Protection: The journal adheres to relevant data protection laws and ensures that authors respect the privacy of research participants. All ethical guidelines for research involving human subjects, animals, or sensitive data must be followed.

  • Institutional Approval: For research involving human or animal subjects, authors must provide details of the institutional ethical approval process, including approval numbers and the names of the relevant ethics committees.
