Peer Review Policy

The Hyderabad Journal of Sciences (HJS) is committed to maintaining high standards of quality, integrity, and transparency in its publication process. To ensure the credibility and academic rigor of all the research it publishes, the journal follows a double-blind peer review process, where both authors and reviewers remain anonymous throughout the review process.

1. Peer Review Process

  • Double-Blind Review: The journal follows a double-blind peer review process, ensuring that both authors and reviewers are unaware of each other’s identities. This method promotes impartiality and fairness in the evaluation of manuscripts.

  • Initial Assessment: Upon submission, the manuscript undergoes an initial assessment by the editorial team. The manuscript is evaluated for relevance, scientific quality, originality, and alignment with the journal’s scope.

  • Reviewer Selection: Reviewers are selected based on their expertise in the relevant field of study. Only experts with a deep understanding of the subject matter will be invited to review a manuscript.

  • Review Invitation: Reviewers are invited to assess the manuscript and provide constructive feedback on the research methodology, results, and overall quality of the work. They are asked to evaluate the manuscript objectively and provide detailed comments to help authors improve their work.

  • Reviewer Responsibilities: Reviewers must provide an objective, unbiased, and thorough evaluation of the manuscript. They must focus on the quality of the research, the novelty of the work, and its scientific merit. Reviewers are also responsible for identifying any potential ethical issues, such as plagiarism or conflict of interest.

2. Types of Peer Review

  • Standard Peer Review: In the standard review process, manuscripts are sent to at least two independent reviewers. They provide feedback and recommendations regarding the manuscript’s suitability for publication.

  • Specialized Review: For highly technical or niche areas of research, the journal may invite additional specialized reviewers with expertise in the specific subject area to ensure the thoroughness of the review process.

  • Fast-Track Review: In urgent cases, a fast-track review process may be implemented, which speeds up the review and decision-making process. This is generally reserved for manuscripts that have a significant impact on the field or contain groundbreaking findings.

3. Reviewer's Responsibilities

  • Confidentiality: Reviewers must treat all manuscripts as confidential documents. They should not disclose or share the content of the manuscript with others, nor use the information contained within the manuscript for personal gain or professional advantage.

  • Timeliness: Reviewers must complete their reviews within the agreed-upon timeframe (usually 2-4 weeks). If a reviewer is unable to meet the deadline, they should inform the editor as soon as possible and withdraw from the review process.

  • Constructive Feedback: Reviewers are required to provide clear, constructive, and actionable feedback. Comments should focus on improving the manuscript rather than criticizing the author(s). The feedback should help authors address any weaknesses in the study and improve its clarity.

  • Conflict of Interest: Reviewers must disclose any potential conflicts of interest that may influence their impartiality. If there is any perceived or real conflict of interest (such as professional rivalry or financial ties), the reviewer must recuse themselves from evaluating the manuscript.

  • Ethical Responsibilities: Reviewers should identify any ethical issues in the manuscript, including potential plagiarism, unethical research practices, or improper citation of sources. If such issues are found, they must be reported to the editorial team.

4. Author's Responsibilities

  • Revisions Based on Feedback: Authors must carefully consider the feedback from reviewers and revise their manuscripts accordingly. If the reviewer’s comments are not addressed, authors must provide a detailed explanation of why certain suggestions were not incorporated.

  • Transparent Reporting: Authors are expected to provide clear and accurate reports of their research. All data should be presented truthfully, and the research methodology should be thoroughly described to allow replication of the study.

  • Ethical Considerations: Authors are responsible for ensuring that their research complies with ethical standards. They must provide evidence of ethical approval for studies involving human or animal subjects, as well as ensure the research does not violate any ethical guidelines.

  • Acknowledging Sources: Authors must properly acknowledge all sources of funding, collaboration, and potential conflicts of interest in their manuscript. The journal expects full transparency in authorship and contributions.

5. Editorial Decision

  • Acceptance: Based on the peer reviewers' comments, the editor will make one of the following decisions:

    • Accept without revisions: If the manuscript is deemed to meet the journal's standards, it will be accepted for publication.

    • Minor revisions: If the reviewers' feedback indicates that minor changes are necessary to improve the manuscript, the author will be asked to address the suggested revisions before resubmission.

    • Major revisions: If the manuscript requires significant improvements, the author will be asked to revise and resubmit the manuscript. The revised manuscript will be re-evaluated by the reviewers.

    • Reject: If the manuscript does not meet the journal's standards or if it has substantial flaws that cannot be easily corrected, it will be rejected.

  • Final Decision: The editor's decision is final. However, authors have the right to appeal the decision if they believe the process was unfair or if they have additional information to present.

6. Transparency and Integrity

  • Reviewer Transparency: After publication, the names of the reviewers and their comments may be published alongside the article to ensure transparency in the review process. This helps maintain accountability and trust in the peer review system.

  • Appeal Process: In the case of a dispute between the authors and reviewers, or if the authors feel that the review process was unfair, the authors may appeal the decision. The editorial team will review the appeal and, if necessary, seek additional reviews or mediation.

7. Ethical Guidelines

  • Research Integrity: The journal is committed to upholding the highest standards of research integrity. Reviewers and editors must be vigilant in identifying any issues of misconduct, including plagiarism, data manipulation, or other forms of unethical research practices.

  • Conflict Resolution: If conflicts arise during the review process, the editorial board will mediate and ensure that the review process remains fair and unbiased.
