Abstract

Mitochondrial genetics plays a critical role in understanding inherited metabolic disorders. These disorders, caused by mutations in mitochondrial or nuclear DNA, affect the body’s energy production mechanisms and can lead to various clinical manifestations. Mitochondria are essential for cellular energy production, and mutations in the mitochondrial genome can disrupt oxidative phosphorylation, leading to metabolic dysfunction. This article provides an overview of mitochondrial genetics, explores the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in metabolic disorders, and discusses diagnostic strategies and therapeutic approaches for managing these disorders. The article also highlights the challenges in understanding and treating mitochondrial diseases and the importance of genetic counseling for affected individuals.
