Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, has led to the emergence of multiple variants that pose challenges to global health. These variants, including the Alpha, Beta, Delta, and Omicron variants, exhibit mutations that impact viral transmissibility, severity of disease, and vaccine efficacy. As of 2023, COVID-19 vaccines have proven to be highly effective in preventing severe illness, hospitalization, and death. However, the emergence of variants has raised concerns about the potential for reduced vaccine effectiveness. This article provides a comprehensive global overview of the impact of SARS-CoV-2 variants on vaccine effectiveness, reviewing the key mutations in these variants, their implications for vaccine development, and the strategies employed by different countries to mitigate the effects of these variants. The article also explores the importance of global vaccine distribution and the role of booster doses in enhancing protection against newer variants.
