Abstract

Polypharmacy, defined as the use of multiple medications by a patient, is a growing concern, particularly in elderly populations with multiple comorbidities. While polypharmacy can enhance therapeutic outcomes, it also increases the risk of drug-drug interactions (DDIs), which may lead to adverse drug reactions (ADRs) and diminished treatment efficacy. This article examines the impact of drug-drug interactions in polypharmacy patients, with a focus on the mechanisms underlying DDIs, strategies for minimizing risk, and future directions for improving medication management in polypharmacy. The article also emphasizes the importance of healthcare providers in monitoring and managing potential DDIs to enhance patient safety and therapeutic effectiveness.
