Abstract

Renal impairment significantly alters the pharmacokinetic (PK) and pharmacodynamic (PD) properties of many drugs, influencing their therapeutic efficacy and safety. PK encompasses the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME) of drugs, while PD refers to the biochemical and physiological effects exerted by the drug on the body. Renal dysfunction can lead to altered drug clearance, resulting in prolonged half-lives, increased drug accumulation, and higher risk of adverse effects. This article explores the PK and PD changes in renal impairment, emphasizing drug dosing adjustments, therapeutic monitoring, and the role of individualized treatment in improving clinical outcomes. A special focus is given to common drug classes affected by renal dysfunction, such as antibiotics, anticoagulants, and antihypertensives.
